The TYPO3 Conference 2024 (#T3CON24) brought together web professionals from all over Europe at the Areal Böhler in Düsseldorf from November 26 to 28. The first day was dedicated to projects from the public and education sectors, while the following days offered exciting insights into topics such as accessibility, artificial intelligence and community development. Our personal highlight was winning the TYPO3 Award in the "Health" category - a recognition of our commitment and creativity. But it wasn't just the content of the talks, presentations and workshops that impressed, the reunion with partners and friends from the TYPO3 universe also made T3CON24 an unforgettable experience.

Three days full of exchange, innovation and inspiration

Over three days, T3CON24 offered a wide range of topics and plenty of room for exchange. The first day was all about the public sector and education with projects such as Government Site Builder 11 (GSB11), which was presented at the ITZ Bund stand. There was particular interest in the talks on student marketing, where we presented our recently published University Study 2024.

The topic of accessibility was also a focus at our stand and throughout the event: at the Incluthon stand, for example, visitors were able to have their name translated into Braille - an interactive example that made the importance of inclusion tangible. Another important presentation on this topic was "AX - Accessible Xperience" by Claudio Zeni and Stefan Barac, who addressed the upcoming requirements of the Accessibility Act and presented practical approaches to implementing accessible websites.

The following days were characterized by many exciting presentations. We were able to bring two keynotes from the +Pluswerk universe to Düsseldorf: Agile Coach and Scrum Master Marc Löffler showed the most common stumbling blocks in agile transformations in his presentation "How to fail your agile transformation successfully" on Wednesday. The following day, Prof. Dr. Patrick Glauner gave a deep insight into the current developments in artificial intelligence in his presentation "The AI revolution has started: how to leverage AI in an ever more competitive business world".

Accessibility you can touch

Accessibility was one of the key topics at our stand and throughout T3CON24. We used interactive activities at our stand to show visitors how important digital inclusion is and how it can be implemented in practice. The tremor simulator from the provider "Age Man" offered the opportunity to experience the challenges faced by older people in everyday digital life. It used an arm sling to simulate involuntary, age-related tremors in the arm. With the trembling arm, visitors to the stand were then able to experience for themselves what it is like to operate a website with limitations. This experience raises awareness of the importance of accessible design and accessible content on the Internet.

Another highlight was our self-developed "Accessibility Memo", a game that communicates the WCAG guidelines in a playful way and shows how inclusion on the web can succeed. The participants learned which aspects such as "perceptible" or "usable" work together to create true accessibility. In addition, Jens Krumm and Matthias Hinner highlighted the importance of accessibility for companies in their presentation "Accessibility in focus: the path to inclusive, digital experiences" on Tuesday afternoon by presenting the legal framework, improving the user experience for everyone and practical implementation with platforms such as TYPO3. The consistently positive response showed that accessibility is not only an obligation, but also a great opportunity for innovation and a better user experience.

TYPO3 Award for +Pluswerk

We are very proud to have won a TYPO3 Award in the "Health" category at T3CON24. The award went to the new TYPO3-based website of the Helmholtz Center for Infection Research (HZI). The new website makes the complex world of infection research accessible and understandable to the general public. Every year, TYPO3 awards prizes in various categories to the best websites and applications that impress with technological innovation, outstanding design and high user-friendliness. In 2024, 138 projects from 59 agencies were submitted and competed against each other.

The award ceremony took place in the festive setting of the TYPO3 Award Gala, which was the grand finale of the conference. There, the nominated projects from the TYPO3 community were honored in various categories - from corporate websites to non-profit projects. A highlight of the evening was the awarding of Benni Mack as "TYPO3 Personality of the Year", accompanied by standing ovations and a moving laudatory speech by Daniel Fau, CEO of TYPO3 GmbH. Furthermore, the TYPO3 Camp Vienna sponsored by +Pluswerk was honored as "The Best TYPO3 Camp 2024". With excellent catering, an after-show party and plenty of room for networking, the gala was not only a worthy finale, but also an unforgettable evening for the TYPO3 community.

Conclusion and outlook

The TYPO3 Conference 2024 has once again shown how lively and committed the TYPO3 community is. The diverse sessions and keynotes not only highlighted current trends, but also showed practical solutions for digital transformation. The live illustration of the presentations by Anja von Klitzing was particularly impressive, giving the content an additional visual dimension. The consistently positive response to our contributions reinforces our commitment to supporting companies and institutions on their path to digital excellence. We are already looking forward to the TYPO3 Conference 2025 and are excited about the upcoming developments within the community.
